District Merchants

About this event

Set during America's post-Civil War Reconstruction era, playwright Aaron Posner uses Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice as an outline for a story that wrestles brilliantly with themes of race, religion, class, and gender.

Here the merchants are Antoine DuPre, a successful and shrewd free-born black man, and Shylock, a prosperous, long-suffering Jewish man. Literally everyone in their world struggles to navigate America's baked-in power structures, from Portia, who must masquerade as a man to pursue a law degree, to Benjamin who hopes to pass as white to win his love, and perhaps a better place in society.

Infused with powerful moments of insight, uncomfortable truths, and wry humor, District Merchants is not to be missed!

Live performances will be in our small space Stage 2 in the American River College Theatre building, 4700 College Oak Drive, Sacramento. Limited seating. Parking is $2 in the parking lot behind the Theatre at the corner of College Oak and Myrtle. For more information, email BoxOffice@arc.losrios.edu.
