- ➤ Fourteen Kiwanis Clubs from Sacramento, El Dorado and Placer counties collected more than 12,000 diapers to help families at Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance. The donation was delivered last Friday in several trucks to the alliance’s Family Wellness Center+ a response to a call for help that grew into a division-wide campaign. Folsom Times

- ➤ Red Hawk Resort Casino's Stage Bar hosts free live music tonight when Inverness 95 performs a four-hour rock set at 8 p.m. until midnight and the Billy Williams Band will play tomorrow from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.—admission is 21+ with seating on a first-come basis. Folsom Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 22,000 students started the 2025–26 school year on August 7 across 37 campuses, with Riverview STEM Academy in Rancho Cordova expanding to a K–8 school after weeks of preparation by teachers and staff. Vista del Lago High School welcomed Phil Leonhardt as its new principal this summer, and Oak Ridge High School showcased a new garden mural on August 6 to add to the festive return to learning. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ CAL FIRE has launched the California Vegetation Burn Severity Online Viewer to help landowners, planners, scientists and communities view statewide maps of burn severity for wildfires over 1,000 acres from 2015 to 2023 — the tool aids in planning prescribed burns, reforestation and recovery efforts under Senate Bill 1101 and will be updated annually. Folsom Times
- ➤ Wild Spirit Recreation will lead a guided paddle at the Cosumnes River Preserve on August 9 to watch Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at sunset. Participants can choose paddle boards or kayaks and join a group of up to six for a safe, personal outdoor experience. Capital Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Folsom City Council voted on June 24 to begin the Proposition 218 process to form a new maintenance assessment district for Natoma Station so that funding from property assessments can better support landscaping, lighting, irrigation and small parks while consolidating with the existing district. The Council will keep funding at fiscal year 2024–25 levels until property owners vote on higher assessments, and Parks and Recreation will update the public at the August 12 City Council meeting — key steps in securing the neighborhood's upkeep.
