A 525-acre stretch of mostly blue oak woodland northwest of Auburn could be protected from development for good. The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve draft agreements for Harvego Bear River Preserve Phase 2, near the Auburn Valley Country Club community. Under current zoning, it could hold about 128 homes.

The $8 million purchase would draw on a state grant and two local funds

It wouldn't be a public park with unrestricted access. would own the land, grazing could continue, and the county and the Placer Conservation Authority would hold the easement. Placer Land Trust expects the state grant later this month. The project would connect more than 7,000 acres of protected land from the Bear River to Raccoon Creek and Hidden Falls Regional Park.
